Epic: Eventless vs Championless Deck Showdown

So after designing a Championless Deck, and then an Eventless Deck, I decided to pit them against each other in a best of 3 matchup. My initial thoughts were that the Championless Deck has a slight advantage, due to being guaranteed to play something every turn, while the Eventless Deck might have some trouble with that, not to mention having issues with drawing enough cards. However, I knew that the Champion deck has the ability to hit very hard with nothing but removal cards being able to deal with them. Tokens would not be able to go toe with some of the big guys, and fliers would be a difficulty as well.

Game 1 - The Eventless Deck came out establishing board presence, and despite a few wipes, it was able to maintain their hand size with cards like The Gudgeon and Muse. Guilt Demon and Corpsemonger were also big threats by removing cards from the Championless Deck's discard pile, which prevented card Recycling. Against all odds, the Championless Deck struggled to maintain their hand size while handling the number of threats on the board. The Eventless Deck eventually won by tokens interestingly enough. Zannos and Raxxa both generated a lot of tokens that the Championless Deck had trouble dealing with, considering most of their cards dealt with single targets. If they wiped, then the 1-cost Champions were still on the board. It ended up being a landslide. I thought I might have guessed incorrectly.

 

Game 2 - The Eventless Deck came out just like the first game, establishing an early board lead. However, this time the Championless Deck managed to have the removal cards it needed. Hunting Pack helped with removal and token generation, which whittled down the health of the Eventless Deck. Heinous Feast provided a chunk of health gain, as well as discard pile removal, which really slowed down the Eventless Deck. A late game Demonic Rising after a big hit from wolves finished the game. All of a sudden it was all tied up, and we went to a thrilling final.

 

Game 3 - In this game, the Championless Deck was the one getting aggressive. Plentiful Dead was played nearly every turn, combining with removal from Drain Essence and Necrovirus, which in turn turned into more zombies. A few off-turns the Eventless Deck found itself unable to spend their gold, which was devastating. They had to spend their turn dealing with the massive amount of tokens, only to have 3-6 more tokens played right after. Plague Zombies and The Risen were the big damage dealers in this game, and it was fairly one-sided.

 

I did not build these decks to play each other initially. I was trying to build decks that could stand on their own. It might be interesting to build them as duel decks, and in doing so it might even out the matchup. Despite the first game, I felt like the Championless Deck had full control of the matchups. Being able to play something every turn was very important, and I think that was the biggest contributor to the win. The Championless Deck was a ton of fun to play, with so many interesting decisions. It just whittled down the opposition inch by inch with all those tokens. Having cards like Demonic Rising, The Risen, and Plague Zombies also were very scary, as they could end games very quickly if the answers to them weren't there.

This was a lot of fun. I'm sure the decks could be much improved. In general, the Eventless Deck really needed more Champions with Ambush, as losing gold was too destructive. Both decks were fun though. Thanks to a great suggestion on boardgamegeek, I think my next deck techs will be an all 1-cost deck vs an illegal all 0-cost deck.   1. Loved thoses decks!

    I would prefer, if possible, that you make these 2 decks more viable and better, specialy if they have a balanced matchup before going to other projects, like the "1-cost deck vs an illegal all 0-cost".

    As right now, as you said, the Eventless seems weak, so no point in building it.
